Universal

                  Bottle

This Chapter explains the Universal Bottle, its Key Benefits and a connection to Packaging Guidelines

What is a universal bottle and key benefits?

Universal Bottle is a package that has a single molding format, and therefore can be used for multiple brands and flavors within our portfolio, with just the labeling and cap being adjusted at the Factory according to the Brand.

What are the main considerations for the use of labeled universal/multi-brand bottles?

We recognize that there may be strong business and/or packaging sustainability reasons (see below) to deviate from proprietary packaging and adopt a universal returnable bottle design for our beverages, in particular Coca-Cola, Sprite and Fanta. Exception requests will only be considered if:

  1. Universal bottles are only proposed for returnable bottles (Ref Pet or RGB).
  2. There is a clear and simple business case focused on value creation that goes beyond mere cost reduction.
  3. There is a documented plan to transition from universal to proprietary returnable bottles once the infrastructure for returnable bottles is established and matured (within 10 years).
  4. Universal bottles are only proposed for new packages.
  5. The universal bottle proposed matches a consistent, globally approved universal bottle design.
  6. Pristine, proprietary bottle shapes for each brand will make up no less than 25% of the individual units of total packaging mix for each brand in each country (including aluminum and fountain.)

It is necessary to maintain 25% pristine proprietary Individual Units bottle designs (glass or PET) of the total brand in each country. This is important to legally protect our existing trademark registrations, which require reasonable commercial use, and to build distinctiveness of the bottle shape in the relevant country, increasing our ability to enforce our rights against third-party similar bottle designs.

All Exception Requests must be submitted through the Global Brand Standards Exception Request tool at http://standards.coke.com
